Large Intestine-14

Bi Nao 臂臑

Each of these two characters means the arm from the elbow to the shoulder. At least we know the point is not on the foot!.

Posterior and lateral aspect of the arm, where the deltoid muscle is inserted on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus.

Two remarks :

1. The texts say : on the line which goes from LI-11 (qu chi) 曲池 to LI-15 (jian yu) 肩髃, it is the next point, have patience. Don’t rely too much on it. The point is where the muscle is inserted on the bone and not necessarily on the line described above. The important thing is to see the V-shape of the muscle or the place of insertion. How do you do that? Well, on muscular people you can see it and even sometimes on persons with a certain amount of fat. If the person has a weight well above the BMI, let your fingers slide from top to bottom on the deltoid. There will be a moment when you will feel a slight unevenness (to the touch, not to the eyes). And if you don’t see anything, if you don’t feel anything, look at the shape of the deltoid, follow its descending curve, its progressive narrowing, and « imagine » its relatively pointed end. You will not be far from the place you are looking for.All this concerns the technical and anatomical aspect. But the most important is the patient. When does he complain of pain in that area? Periarthritis, too many forced abduction movements (Ah! The fitness clubs!), lifting a heavy suitcase, etc. But the patient is going to show it with his finger. “He knows” his LI-14. And even if he doesn’t know it, when you reach the periosteum with the needle (delicately, if not the patient will not like you), he will say to you: « Oh! Doctor ! You have just found the point » . This gives you quite a boost!

To summarise : the point is where the patient says it is.

Insertion of the needle? Perpendicular, 0.5 0.8 cun : OK. Or you can needle 1- 2 cun along the anterior edge of the humerus. Now, now, it is not necessary. It is true that you are completely in the muscle, but don’t tempt the devil…

LI-14.4

A short pause with ideogrammes. I told you in Volume I the story of the colleague who wrote characters without ever having learned how to do so, with the result that his writing looked like rubbish and even irritated sinophiles like me.

Now I am going to teach you a few characters. You will see; it is veeeery easy. First character : , this is the number 1.Second character : , this is the number 2.Third character: , this is the number 3.And don’t assume that you can write the three strokes of number 3 in random order.! You MUST start with the upper one and end with the lower one. Yes, sir.

Carried away by your enthusiasm you then decide : Ah ! But then number 4 is… Well, no. Here is the number 4:
. On the one hand it would have been too easy. On the other, can you see yourself writing the number 796 in this way ?
